Being a Sunday I thought today that I’ better do some sewing so that I had something to wear this week! So I made a skirt in five minutes. I started with a dress from the op shop (thrift shop) that I got in a bag with others for $5. The elastic shirring at the back had stretched, so a skirt seemed the best idea.
I just cut the length I needed, plus a bit to turn over for a waistband. the material is very thin, so I thought a casing and elastic would be fine.
The casing is just wider than the elastic, and stitched top and bottom so the elastic sits better. I used a pin from an old hair roller to thread through the elastic.
It seemed wasteful to throw the rest of the dress away, so I decided to make an apron. I saw retro styled aprons yesterday at a craft show selling for $28, and determined to make one for less than that. I used the top, which already had ties, and cut the rest of the shape from around an old apron I have. Then I just added pockets (cut from the side of the top piece), and a ruffle (made from the left over fabric from the skirt). The ties at the side were elasticised pieces from the back and middle of the dress.
The apron took about two hours to make – ruffles are time consuming!
So an apron and fathers day – cake time…... Trusty mix-master to the rescue!
I must say that this is a great looking cake (for me anyway), and it rose really well. Here is the recipe, from my 1950s sunbeam mixmaster recipe booklet.
Our attempt at frosting didn’t work so well (it boiled over), so we just made chocolate flavoured cream. The result?
My four with their Dad – and me and mine and Miss Six - Love you Dad!
